In the four weeks since we inaugurated our renovated kitchen, I’ve been searching for the superlatives to describe our experience with Tom Stumpff and his team. Coming up short, let me settle by saying that my wife and I are thrilled: the kitchen is everything we wanted, only better! Tom gets huge credit, uncannily understanding our goals and tastes. I’m not the trusting sort, for example initially resisting some of Tom’s design suggestions. But as the project proceeded, particularly during the construction stage, I increasingly understood that he probably had a better sense than I did of what would look good to me. Tom is also a perfectionist. For example, near the end of construction he felt that the location of one of the can lights was off and so had his team close it up and then cut/wire a new one. Similarly, he was unhappy with the floor trim below one of our appliances and so constructed a magnetic face plate with wood that matched our cabinet. And the Cabinets!! They are awesome, beautifully grained and incredibly functional. Tom took us to visit the cabinet maker at his workshop, who helped guide us on some key design choices, such as the wood (ash) and extending them to the ceiling rather than the more-typical choice of ending somewhat lower. A few additional happy-face emojis: Tom's workers were very friendly and did an awesome job cleaning up at the end of each day. Indeed at the end of the project, when Tom's housekeeping crew arrived, I thought they had already been through. The weekend after, when we were unpacking, we asked Tom for an extra shelf for each of our vertically spacious cabinets... and there they were when we got home from work on Monday. Since then, to my surprise, I've been finishing my evenings cleaning up the kitchen, admiring and enjoying our new digs. Lastly, we've already independently hired two of the contractors Tom recommended: a plumbing company and a roofer, both of which have excellent reputations (I checked) and significantly underbid several competitors.

Stumpff Homeworks is everything you want in a contractor and more. Tom and Team did a fantastic job with the work we contracted them to do - Knock out a load-bearing wall and fix related flooring/electrical along with a few other electrical items.
I have used a few contractors over the years and have all done good work but Stumpff was great and exceeded expectations. They were efficient with their time and made this project as small of a disruption as possible. The team also took extra care of daily cleanup to ensure my kiddos and such didn’t get in to something they shouldn’t which was much appreciated. Not to mention the remodel looks as if it was originally built this way!

About to begin our 6th and largest project with Tom and his crew. We are excited to begin. Of course being under construction is never a convenient endeavor but Stumpff’s crew makes it more than manageable. They are prompt, courteous, particular, and tidy. I appreciate that Tom is also very involved in overseeing the process and has a great rapport with his associates. Tom Stumpff and his team did a terrific job on our remodel. We interviewed 5 remodeling companies for the first round to discuss the project, then had them back for a final round to discuss their approach to the project, timing and the pricing. I could pretty much tell from round 1 who we would select, but we still needed round 2. One guy wanted an extension, so he was out, and one other didn't even bid. It was a decent size job, basically remodel our entire first floor, add 10 feet to the back of the house, new cabinets, counters, all new wood flooring, add a covered porch, build a large attached second garage, enlarge the laundry room and even add a kennel room for the 4 dogs. It took about 9 months to complete the entire project. One concern you always hear about is remodel companies and contractors not being on time, not communicating, late and sloppy, etc. I guess some don't even come back after getting started. Working with Tom was a terrific experience and our communication together was amazing. And it's still that way a couple months after completion. During the project and afterward I could send him an email during the waking hours and always get a response and answer that day. I sent him many messages after 10:00pm and would still always get his response that evening. The exact opposite of what you might be fearful of. Tom's team is excellent - we know every one of them - first name basis (this happens with you live with people for 9 months). They were all great with my wife, kids and dogs. Tom has contractors that he uses exclusively after being in the business for years. That's how he keeps the quality high. Sometimes we had to wait until the contractor crews could fit us in to their schedules, but for me the quality of work was so much more important than the time - and remember we'd be cooking with a toaster oven in our unfinished and junky basement. We put a real premium on quality for this project - and we couldn't be happier with the result. The next project at some point will be the upstairs and possibly the basement. I won't call anyone else but Tom.

Tom and his crew recently installed new kitchen appliances and rebuilt our outdoor wood deck. Also, in the past Tom constructed a new railing on our upstairs catwalk/deck. Instead of the usual vertical slats, he came up with a design that is both vertical slats with a lovely design in the middle of each section. We love it! To install the new stove a sliver of the granite countertop had to be removed. End result the installed stove looks great, fits beautifully! All the new appliances look great. Tom was excellent to work with in replacing a custom, unique storm and front door on my 90 year old home. He kept the integrity and character of the original door in the new more functional creation. Tom has so much patience and takes his time to give you a perfect, quality finished product. My house settles and moves from time to time, and Tom will come out and adjust the door slightly, as needed, to have a perfect shut. This is something we struggled with on our own for years with our old door. My dog even grew to love having Tom around. We had a very good experience working with Stumpff HomeWorks and will use the company again should we do more remodeling. The owner, Tom Stumpff, is skilled in Project Management, Design and Communications and has a strong network of competent subcontractors and material suppliers.
Since our project would entail a complete remodel of kitchen, family room, sun room and guest bathroom, as well as modifying a load-bearing wall and replacing the flooring, we knew there would be a significant number of trades and material suppliers involved. Additionally, although we knew what we did not like about our house, we did not have a clear vision of what we wanted instead.
We had talked in general terms with two other companies but did not feel they were up to the job. A recommendation to consider Tom came from a neighbor who had recently used Tom’s company on a bathroom remodel and who had known Tom for a long time.
In our first meeting Tom answered all our questions, be they operational (how his company accomplishes their work) or legal (work permits, licensing, insurance, release of liens) then listened carefully as we described what we did not like about the current configuration of our main level. Tom told us he generally acts as both the Designer and General Contractor then offered a number of suggestions for us to consider. We soon decided that Tom had the skills set, connections and personality traits we needed for a successful project and asked him to proceed with a rough design and estimate.
Tom arranged for the all the major subcontractors to visit the house (we appreciated that they all came on the same day) and after getting their feedback, developed a quote for the work that was within our budget. After a bit more project definition he submitted a draft contract and at our request included a listing of all suppliers and subcontractors and tied the payment schedule to getting a release-of-lien from each as well as his own company. We ended up with over 20 lien releases.
Tom arranged and accompanied us on many visits to material suppliers. He guided our selection of colors and materials, offering his recommendations in an easy manner leaving us feeling free to disagree.
The demolition and remodeling work took a number of months and we stayed in the house during this time. We appreciated that the workers cleaned up the site each night.
A number of times during the project we had concerns about how things would turn out. We brought these concerns to Tom each time and either Tom or his very capable colleague, Gabe, promptly solved the issue (if it really was an issue…often they were still working on that part of the project). He demonstrated his open-mindedness by incorporating our suggestions where appropriate and feasible. It is obvious from the above but worth highlighting here that Tom communicated well with us during this project, that we are satisfied customers and that we have no hesitation recommending Stumpff HomeWorks.

Tom Stumpff is the consummate professional, we have him on speed dial for any home project we consider doing. They pay attention to how you will use the space, problem solve when needed to make it work, and they pay close attention to detail. One morning I came out to find Tom sanding the custom front door they did for us for like the 10th time. I already thought it was fabulous, but Tom saw something not 150% perfect and he was not satisfied. I dare say we have the nicest front door in Overland Park! They are fairly priced for the quality of work they do, they stand by their product, communicate well, and are just plain good people. Finally— after a 3 year hiatus beteeen projects, Tom remembered my kids names as well as the dogs and 2 cats. Can’t go wrong with Stumpff Homeworks.

Whenever someone asks me who did my kitchen or master bath, I refer them to Tom Stumpff. We used Stumpff Homeworks for a complete kitchen and master bath remodel. We also used them to put in all new hardwoods throughout the entire house and replace our doors and shutters. From start to finish they were professional, meticulous, and organized. They did a good job communicating with us throughout the entire project about each phase. And one of the things I must point out is their ability to contain the dust only in the work areas and how wonderful they cleaned up each day. I have a baby and this was something I was completely worried about. But Tom and his team prepped the entire house so that the walls and floors were protected. The Zip wall he puts up is pretty amazing. The fact that they take the time to do this before demo is fantastic! We could not be happier with the choice we made and the work they did. Hands down, they are a wonderful company to work with and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a detailed high end GC.

We just completed a complete kitchen remodel with Stumpff Homeworks and could not be happier with the results. Tom and his team were consummate professionals from beginning to end. Among the highlights of our experience are:
1) Worksite behavior: Gutting the kitchen of a 90 year old house is a messy job, but I never found dust and debris outside of the work area. Tom and all of the subcontractors were always respectful of our space and our time. They were also very thoughtful. We had forgotten to take down the door frame where we had measured our kids heights before demo. Of their own initiative, the demo crew carefully removed and saved it for us.
2) Excellent advice: Tom was a great source of advice on design choices, paint colors and practical problems. He was patient and listened to our concerns and helped us find great solutions.
3) Attention to detail: In addition to making sure all the big pieces of the puzzle are flawless, Tom and his team notice and care about the little details, like matching the floor stain or making sure patched woodwork blended smoothly with the existing woodwork.
4) Reliability: As I mentioned above, the Stumpff Homeworks team was very respectful of our time. Tom shows up when he says he will, and did a great job keeping us informed about the project timeline and what subcontractors would be at our house.
Stumpff Homeworks created a beautiful new kitchen for us and made the extensive renovations as painless as possible. We would recommend them without hesitation!

We just completed a major master bath remodel with Stumpff HomeWorks and I could not recommend them more highly. Tom and his staff are detail-oriented and very respectful of a client's space. For example, they spent a half-day covering the carpet on my stairs tarping off the room they were going to work in, etc. Very little dust or dirt got into other parts of my home during the 3 month project...I can't say I've ever experienced this from other contractors. In addition, Tom is a good communicator--telling me who was going to be out on the project and when and all of his sub-contractors were respectful, detail-oriented workers as well. My only hesitation in leaving this glowing recommendation is that Stumpff HomeWorks will be too busy to work on my next project!
